Drip irrigation system powered by an electric pump is now necessary to grow crops in Liwa Oasis in the U.A.E. after expanded use of ground water has lowered the water table.
Liwa is an ancient chain of palm gardens that tap into water left by ancient of paleo lakes that once filled this shallow depression on the northern edge of the Empty Quarter, the world's largest sand sea.
