Punjab, India
Poor families of migrant workers from surrounding states come to the grain markets of Punjab to work as laborers during the two-month-long rice harvest season. The men work in marketplace crews, moving and winnowing rice, and the women, youth, and elderly scavenge the chaff piles for grain that they can resell for much-needed income. Although India is the world’s biggest exporter of rice, it ranks 101 out of 116 countries in the Global Hunger Index.
