Ice cave on the north side of Mt. Erebus at 3,450M where steam escapes from cracks in underlying volcanic rock, melting out chambers in overlying ice, forming vents and cavities. Warm moist air condenses inside the caves and forms ice crystals that grow on the walls of the chambers. Seen in the large room is volcanologist Alexander Gerst inspecting volcanic ash which coats the walls of the largest room.
