Artisanal fishing boats preparing to leave for a 7–10-day trip at sea in Joal Fadiout, Senegal. Joal has been the most productive fishing area in Senegal for the past few decades, but fishing has declined in recent years. In the six weeks prior to my visit in 2018, most of the local fishing boats had to go elsewhere. Most of what they were landing were small pelagic fish such as sardines and mackerel.
