Pontoon bridges were installed across the Ganges (Ganga) River to connect the tent city to the main confluence (Sangam) of the Ganges and Yamuna River. During times of peak attendance like this, the pontoon bridges were closed to all but emergency traffic to reduce the chance of stampeds. This Kumbh Mela is expected to attract over 400 million pilgrims from across India during its six-week festival that happens once every 12 years, and this year's festival was a Maha (Great) Kumbh Mela, which only happens every 144 years. It is the largest gathering of humanity on the planet.
