Rapeseed fields provide a tourist boom in Luoping and Xinghua, in the Qianduo Scenic Area of Jiangsu Province near Shanghai. Chinese and foreign visitors alike flock to boats and a new pagoda to tour the “kingdom of 10,000 isles.” Here, farmers plant the colorful crop on raised fields between canals known as duotian, meaning “stack field,” that date to the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE). After harvest, the raised fields are planted in taro. The irrigation scheme that provides water to the area was recognized as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure in 2022.
