Free-range cross-bred pietran pigs forage in the mud of Modest & Kamiel, a small 2-hectare organic farm with 46 pigs and 100 broiler chickens and 30 layers. They raise their crops and livestock organically, but slaughter conventional. The family has owned the farm for five years, and also grows flowers and has “glamping” tents for summer visitors, which bring in a third of their annual revenue. They sell their pigs/month as fresh meat, dried sausage, pâté, etc. Organic livestock farms are a rarity in Belgium.
