The newly landscaped Island features 30 acres of new park designed by West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architects.

Governors Island, in Upper New York Bay, is public land, administered partly by the U.S. government and partly by the city. Aside its monuments, new park, and a proviso that no permanent residences or casinos will be permitted there, its future is filled with promise and uncertainty. By far the most audacious plan involving the island emerged in 2011 when Columbia University professors and students proposed using landfill to create a land bridge connecting it to Lower Manhattan. They envisioned an entirely new neighborhood, which they called Lower Lower Manhattan, or LoLo.
