Main ferry terminal on the Buriganga River in Dhaka, a city surrounded by water. It's not unusual for the river to rise and flood over its banks, an almost annual event. Many of the channels that once drained the town have been filled in and built upon, which makes it more difficult for urban areas to drain during heavy monsoon rains, and it exacerbates flooding.
The river is also one of the main transportation hubs for the southern part of the country, as it links low-lying areas that have no roads. Dhaka has chronic traffic problems, and the river is jammed with large long-distance ferry boats, cargo boats, and small rowboats used to move passengers across the river.
