McMurdo Station, the largest human settlement in Antarctica and the main base for US scientific and logistic efforts in Antarctica. The population swells to some 1700 people between October and January and is staffed through the long winter by a few hundred hardy individuals. The base is supplied annually by a cargo vessel and fuel tanker, which often need an ice breaker to reach this most southerly port in the world.
