A class of 10th graders on a traditional day in Chipaya village, when all students come dressed in native clothes. There are only 2,000 Chipaya speakers left from an ancient culture that predates the Inca. A lunch of sheep soup and potatoes was provided for all high school students. After lunch, the students went home (from 1-2 PM) for a rest and came back later in more regular (modern) clothing.
The high school principal told me that there are 240 students in the lower school and 125 in the upper school. Fewer than ten students here ever graduate from 12th grade, as most leave for work in Chile before then, immigrating illegally. It's rare that any students go on to university in Oruro or La Paz.
