Residents of Malé flock to the shore of the tiny Maldivian capital on Friday afternoons to watch the sunset and enjoy their free time. Malé is ringed by concrete tetrapods that were a gift from the Japanese government after flooding from big waves, known locally as "udha", in 1987. The tetrapods become defacto outdoor furniture for a densely crowded city with little open space.
This photograph is part of a project that examines the global impact of rising sea levels, and the ways different countries and communities are engineering solutions to this growing problem.
