Breeding herd of white Nelore cattle grazing on the grassy plains of Fazenda Carpa Serrana, a 27k-hectare family-owned cattle farm in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Nelore cattle originated in India, are well suited to tropical conditions, and don’t require a lot of feed. Some 80% of Brazilian cattle are Nelore, and are grass-fed and not fattened at feedlots, but that is starting to change with increasing incomes and exports. The fazenda has 19-20k herd of Nelore cattle and sells about 3,000 calves per year. About 15k hectares of the fazenda is for cattle and soybeans, and the rest is left as forest. The cattle are fed some silage and hay in the dry season to help maintain weight.
