In many parts of the sparsely forested Netherlands, thick layers of peat were harvested for hundreds of years and burned as fuel both in homes and by industry. In this northern region, many slender islets have been turned into pricey vacation properties for urbanites. Wijdemeren, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.
