Harvesting barley from experimental plots of different varieties of wheat and barley at Lole Farm, a part of Oromia Seed Enterprise, a government-owned business to develop, grow, and distribute improved seeds for Ethiopian farmers. In spite of such efforts, Ethiopia is still a net importer of grain crops such as wheat.
Some 90% of Ethiopia's 110 million people are small-scale agriculturalists, with scarcely any cash crop for income, or access to electricity and plumbing. But change is coming rapidly, with new hydroelectric dams, and one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa.
