Andhra Pradesh, India
Shelling shrimp at a factory in Andhra Pradesh, India. The shrimp are raised in ponds of brackish water 20 miles from the sea and eat 130% of their weight in wild fish in the form of fishmeal from Peru. The laborers here were all women, as I was told they work faster with their hands, and make about $8-9/day with room, board, and medical. India is the world’s biggest exporter of farmed shrimp, and most of these were being packaged for sale at Costco in the U.S.
