At low tide, villagers from Benguerra Island, Mozambique, cast a net hundreds of meters long to catch fish entering a shallow passage into Bazaruto Archipelago, effectively stripping the inner bay of migrating wildlife. A recent study estimates that between 1950 and 2016, the abundance of fish declined by 93 percent in Mozambique, with its many shore-based subsistence fishing communities.
