Seis Amigos pig breeding farm about 15 km east of Tapurah. The sows are artificially inseminated with semen given by the food conglomerate BRF which runs the slaughterhouse and also provides the starter pigs for the farm. Seis Amigos is the second-largest pig breeder in Brazil, and plans to expand to retake the top position in the booming agricultural sector of Mato Grosso Norte.
Each sow averages a little over 11 offspring to adulthood, and is productive for 2-3 years before their fertility drops and they are sent to the slaughterhouse. The green dye seen on some of the pigs is to prevent infection.
