Fields of wheat, barley, and teff wait to be harvested on the plateau of the Amharic Highlands in Ethiopia. Property lines are now delineated with windbreaks of eucalyptus trees, which are used for construction. The plateau has poor drainage, so the flood-prone areas are used as pasture for sheep, goats, cattle, and donkeys.
Some 90% of Ethiopia's 110 million people are small-scale agriculturalists, with scarcely any cash crop for income or access to electricity and plumbing. But change is coming rapidly, with new hydroelectric dams and one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa.
