Aerial view of Tin Merzouga, a remote part of the Algerian Sahara near the borders of Libya and Niger. The area is remarkable for the deep orange color of its sand dunes, which are colored by the oxidation of iron minerals in the sand. Generally the more orange the sand, the older it is, as it has taken many millennia of exposure to water and sun to oxidize it to this degree.
