Cattle waiting to be shipped overseas (mostly Indonesia) for Halal slaughter. The yard is used to hold, process and quarantine cattle and buffalo after they are brought in from the bush. The feedyard introduces them to pelletized food and water systems like they will get on ships, and makes sure they are healthy (dip for ticks, injections, etc.). Brahman cattle and Asian buffalo were introduced to Northern Australia in the 19th Century and have become one of this sparsely populated area’s biggest food exports. The animals are left to run wild almost all of the year until the beginning of the dry season, when then are mustered (rounded up) from remote areas and trucked here for export to Muslim countries for consumption.
