Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Harvesting sugarcane on Taboga Plantation, from 6,000 hectares of irrigated farmland. These specialized cane harvesters only stop for crew changes every 12 hours, at sunrise and sunset. The global pandemic forced them to rely completely on these specialized cutting machines, as the seasonal crews of Nicaraguan workers were not able to cross the border to hand-cut the swampy and stony parts of the plantation. Much of their factory’s sugar output is purchased by Coca-Cola through the national sugar board.
