A fishmeal factory near the edge of Nouadhibou harbor, where 5 tons of wild fish converts into 1 ton of fishmeal and 1 ton of fish oil. Many fish farms claim conversion ratios of 1 kilogram of fish food for 1 kilogram of fish weight gain, but that is measuring dry fish food against live whole fish. The actual conversion ratio of wild fish to farmed fish or shrimp is difficult to calculate, as aquaculture feeds are usually a mixture of fish meal and plant proteins like soybeans laced with fish oil and other miscellaneous ingredients.
