Bartaga village just upstream from Gao on the Niger River in Mali. The dune here is said to be the tallest along the Mali section of the Niger River where it forms the southern boundary of the Sahara Desert. Rice is the main wetland crop in Mali, and is planted when the river is high, as seen here. Villagers bring their cattle down to the river to drink each morning, and graze them in them inland to stay clear of mosquitos.
