Salt works at Aiding Lake, the lowest point in Asia (and second lowest place in the world after the Dead Sea) some 160 m. below sea level. The workers earn 7 yuan (about 90 cents) per ton and can shovel about 5 tons per day out of long trenches that have been cut through the dirty surface to expose the salty water to the air. The summer temps here are 53°C in summer and -20°C in winter. The salt works is in operation in three seasons but closes for winter. The salt is for human consumption.
